Event Information

Title: Opioid Settlements and the Unsettled War on Drugs

Description: How are opioid settlements actually being spent? States and localities have entered their fourth year of spending in 2024, but little is still known at the national level about how jurisdictions are spending monies, and exactly what fraction of settlements overall will be spent to support harm reduction or War on Drugs approaches. OpioidSettlementTracker.com will provide an overview of spending patterns observable from published materials, discuss opioid settlement agreements' terms against the history of "big tobacco" and War on Drugs, and illustrate the direct relationship between nuanced expenditure reporting and efficacious investments. NACCHO and LAC will discuss specific strategies and policies city and county health officials and departments can enact to advance health and racial equity in their opioid settlement-related spheres of influence and empower attendees with important considerations for the inclusion of community at opioid settlement decision-making tables. Attendees are encouraged to bring local examples of settlements to discuss.

Type: Workshop/Training - 90 Minutes
